“Promoting rape culture”: Indian ad raises social media storm


India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has asked YouTube and Twitter to take down two advertisements of a body spray which sparked widespread uproar for “promoting rape culture”.

The advertisements of the body spray, called “Shot” by brand Layer’r, have been widely called out on social media.

Letters have been sent from the Indian government to both platforms stating the “video is detrimental to the portrayal of women in the interest of decency or morality” and that it is in violation of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules of 2021, reports Hindustan Times quoting people familiar with the matter.

The Advertising Standards Council of India, the regulatory body concerned, is also holding an inquiry into the matter.

“(Layer’r Shot) Deodorant advertisement blatantly promotes the rape mentality in the country. We’ve issued notice to Delhi Police that FIR must be registered & ad must be immediately taken down from all platforms,” Swati Malilwal, the chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women has said.

Twitter users have mentioned that the ads were aired during the England vs New Zealand cricket match on SonyLIV.

Both the ads show women becoming apprehensive of being sexually assaulted by a group of men making suggestive comments, adds the Hindustan Times report.

Social media users have also posed questions like how such ideas for ads could have been approved.
