Praising women’s ‘lovely voices’ is bad business


I am 50 this week and comforted by recent headlines declaring that over-50s are back in vogue at work. Apparently, McDonald’s and Halfords have fired up recruitment campaigns to entice older workers back from partial retirement or to consider a change of sector.

This is good news, and I don’t say so from an entirely selfish perspective — an exodus of older employees post-Covid is one of the reasons why we are facing such a skills shortage. However, there is another under-utilised segment of the population that is also on my mind as I hurtle towards my birthday: women.

It shouldn’t still be necessary to write about how hard it is for women to get ahead in business — but it is. I am sure
