Garland data center project will add to area tech space

Garland officials are set to approve plans for a new data center near Bush Turnpike.

Austin-based Digital Realty plans to build the almost 180,000-square-foot tech campus at the corner of Ferris and Holford roads.

The more than 18-acre development site is just north of an existing entertainment building.

Jacobs Engineering designed the new data canter, which was approved last month by Garland’s planning and zoning commission.

The Garland city council will get the final say on the project next week.

The shell data center building will cost almost $60 million and is set to open in 2024, according to planning documents filed with the state.

Digital Realty is one of the world’s largest data center operators with almost 300 locations in more than two dozen countries. It operates over a dozen data centers in North Texas.

Along with the new Garland campus, the tech company is building a similar facility in Lewisville. The Lewisville project is on Edmonds Lane near State Highway 121.

Demand for Dallas-Fort Worth area data center space has grown with the increase in population and business moves to the area.

Last year, D-FW saw record use of data center space, and multiple projects are in the works. North Texas has ranked among the top five data center markets in the U.S. for years.
