Google searches point to Kiwis’ hunger for vegan knowledge

New Zealand ranks forth in the world in Google searches about veganism – not eating meat or other animal products.

Surveys suggest between six and 10 percent of Kiwis follow a vegetarian or vegan diet.

Aotearoa comes in behind the UK, Germany and Austria, and above Australia, Switzerland and Israel.

Vegan Society Aotearoa spokesperson Claire Insley said it was great that there was so much interest in the diet.

“A lot of it is the environmental factors … it’s the whole climate change thing is really getting people to understand that they need to change what they eat.

“So yeah it’s really good.”

She said there was a lot of saturated fats in animal products and a a vegan diet had no cholesterol.

Claire Insley said surveys suggested between six and 10 percent of New Zealanders followed a vegetarian or vegan diet.

The share of total searches related to veganism in New Zealand broadly matches the international trend.

It has stayed steady between 2017 and 2021 – with a large spike in 2019 then declined steadily since the middle of last year.
