Waris Punjab De head Amritpal Singh escapes arrest near Jalandhar; several supporters detained | Chandigarh News – Times of India

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab police on Saturday launched a major search operation to capture Waris Punjab De head Amritpal Singh as he escaped the arrest after police stopped his cavalcade.
His cavalcade was stopped by the police at Mehatpur in Jalandhar. Following that, some of his associates were detained, however, Singh managed to escape.
Last month, the supporters of Amritpal Singh, described as a Khalistan sympathiser, clashed with police and stormed into a police complex in Amritsar district, protesting against the arrest of one of his associates.
Later, police had booked Singh and his supporters for allegedly kidnapping a man.
A case was registered against Singh, a self-styled preacher, and his supporters for allegedly kidnapping and thrashing Varinder Singh, a resident of Chamkaur Sahib in Rupnagar district.
Meanwhile, Punjab Police have got recommendation for suspension or cancellation of 8,100 arms licences, some of them having links with Amritpal Singh and his supporters. So far, police have cancelled 800 of these licences
